“From the moment of hatching, even turtles teach us the power of unity: together, they rise, pushing towards the light, reminding us that greatness is achieved through collective effort.”

Every May 23rd, we celebrate World Turtle Day to remind us of the importance of turtles and the urgent need for their protection. This is a moment to reflect on their remarkable journeys, recognise the challenges they face, and take decisive action for their survival.

As one of the oldest living species, sea turtles carry a significant story of survival and adaptation. They travel thousands of miles across the open ocean yet never forget where they came from. Female sea turtles return to the exact beach where they were hatched to lay their own eggs. Their migration patterns highlight not only their endurance but also their deep connection to the place they call home.

Many coastal communities rely on sea turtles presence for tourism and ecological balance. They support marine ecosystems by maintaining healthy seagrass beds and coral reefs, which in turn support other marine species. They remind us of our interconnectedness and the responsibility we have to protect our shared environment.

The continued existence of sea turtles is both a beacon of hope and a call to action for conservation. Efforts to protect nesting sites and reduce bycatch have led to significant successes, demonstrating that positive change is possible when we act as stewards of the environment.

As we celebrate World Turtle Day, let us be inspired by their resilience and wisdom. Sea turtles have faced immense challenges for the longest time, and they’ve shown us how tough nature can be. Let us honour them by committing to actions that will keep them safe for the future.
