Baseline hydro-ecological survey in Saudi Arabia

Sector: Water Resources
Country: Kingdom of Saudi Arabia
Study Scale: Regional
Year: 2023
Categories: Environment | Government | Water

Large areas of Western Saudi Arabia have recently become the focus of biodiversity conservation. Because of the hyper-arid nature of the region, water resources are the main constraint to biodiversity. A regional baseline study of the area was therefore required to enable government-led efforts in prioritization.

Aquageo teamed with King Abdullah University of Science and technology (KAUST) to plan and lead two major campaigns across 100s of kilometres of wadis and coastal plain in KSA, which combined hydrogeological and terrestrial ecological staff. We highlighted potential target areas, performed spring and groundwater sampling and produced conceptual model and conservation recommendation reports.

A flagship oceanarium development is proposed on the Red Sea coast. The facility will require a high throughput of seawater, and a subsurface well intake at the shore has been identified as the lowest environmental impact option.
